How the total is worked out
For every leg the tool divides distance by speed to get the moving time, then adds the wait you entered for the connection after it. Summing the legs gives the moving total and the waiting total; the final buffer is added to the waiting side, since that is where unplanned time accumulates. The grand total is shown both in minutes and as a tidy hours-and-minutes label.
Seeing moving time and waiting time apart is often the eye-opener: on remote routes the hours spent standing at a jetty or a bus stop can rival the hours actually in motion, which is worth knowing before you commit to a same-day connection.

Getting somewhere remote is rarely a single hop. A typical journey might be a flight, a bus, and a boat, each at a very different speed, with waits in between that can add up to more than the moving time itself. Adding the legs separately — rather than guessing one average speed for the whole trip — gives a far more honest total, and shows you where the hours really go.
What speed should I use for each leg?
Use realistic averages, not top speeds. A long-haul jet cruises around 800 km/h but the door-to-door average is lower; a rural bus on winding roads might average 40–55 km/h; a local ferry perhaps 15–25 km/h. When in doubt, err slow — remote transport rarely beats the timetable, and often trails it.
What is the final buffer for?
It is slack for the whole journey: the connection that runs late, the boat that waits for a full load, the road delay you cannot predict. On tightly linked remote routes, missing one leg can cost you a day, so a buffer of an hour or more is prudent — and if you are relying on the last connection of the day, plan as though it will slip.
