How the estimate is built
First the calculator sums your daily costs — lodging, food, and local transport — and multiplies them by the number of days and travellers. Then it adds the fixed costs that do not scale with time: reaching and leaving the area, permits and guides, and any gear bought for the trip. That gives a subtotal, and the contingency percentage is applied on top to reach the grand total.
The per-person and per-day figures at the end are the ones worth carrying in your head: they tell you roughly how much cash each traveller should budget and how the meter ticks over each day you are out there.

What should the contingency buffer cover?
The buffer is for the gap between plan and reality when you are far from an ATM or a cheap alternative: a washed-out road that forces a detour, a guide day you did not plan, a weather delay that adds a night, or prices that are simply higher than the guidebook said. Fifteen percent is a reasonable default for accessible regions; push it toward 20–25% for truly isolated or long expeditions.
