How the saving is worked out

The calculator builds two totals. The peak total is the peak nightly rate times your nights, plus the peak airfare times your travellers. The off-season total is the same sum with your low-season figures. The difference between them is your saving, and dividing that by the peak total gives the percentage off. The per-person and per-night breakdowns show where the money actually comes from.

Airfare is optional — leave both flight fields at zero to compare lodging alone. Because the tool keeps flights per person and lodging per night, it scales correctly whether you are a solo traveller on a long stay or a family on a short one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can travelling off-season really save?

It varies enormously by destination, but on many popular routes low-season lodging runs 30–50% below peak, and airfares often follow the same curve. Because accommodation is usually the biggest line in a trip budget and it is charged per night, even a modest nightly difference compounds fast over a week or two — which is exactly what this calculator makes visible.

What counts as peak, shoulder, and low season?

Peak is when demand and prices are highest — school holidays, ideal weather, major festivals. Low season is the opposite: fewer visitors, lower prices, and sometimes tougher conditions. Shoulder season sits between them. To compare shoulder against peak here, just enter the shoulder-season rate in the 'off-season' fields.

Does cheaper always mean worse?

Not necessarily. Off-season travel can bring emptier trails, easier restaurant tables, and a more relaxed welcome from hosts who have time to talk. The trade-offs are real too — shorter daylight, some closures, or weather that limits certain activities — so weigh the saving against what you would miss, not the price alone.

Are the numbers exact?

No. The calculator does honest arithmetic on the figures you enter, so it is only as accurate as your quotes. Rates move with demand right up to departure, and taxes and fees differ by provider. Treat the result as a planning estimate and confirm live prices before you book.
